Fertility Counselling Brisbane Northside

Couples across Brisbane are having to deal with infertility issues that are affecting their ability to start a family.  During this difficult process it is important that they speak with their GP about fertility counselling so that they are able to make informed decisions and protect their relationship.

Infertility is the inability to conceive an offspring after one year of having sexual intercourse without contraception. Being infertile affects many aspects of a person’s life – be it work, relationships, self-esteem, and outlook in life. According to National Health Service (NHS) statistics, one out of six couples experience difficulties in conceiving a child. People who are faced with this condition may handle the situation different from each other depending on their personalities and life experiences. However, it can be a great source of despair and emotional struggle for some because of feelings of isolation and incapacity to create own descendants.

Infertility Causes

There is no one definitive factor on what causes infertility and more often, doctors are unable to pinpoint the root cause of the problem.

There are several conditions on what may cause infertility among couples. There are different health issues that either a male or a female may encounter. Below are some of them:

Females:

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Early Menopause
  • Thyroid Problems
  • Long term chronic illness
  • Cushing’s Syndrome
  • Womb Problems
  • Fallopian Tube Problems
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
  • Endometriosis

Males:

  • Low Sperm Count
  • Low Sperm Mobility
  • Abnormal Sperm
  • Testicle Problems
  • Ejaculation Disorders

Apart from these medical conditions, the following factors can also affect conception on both sexes:

  • Age
  • Stress
  • Weight

Is Infertility Testing Encouraged?

For an accurate diagnosis, undergoing an infertility test would be helpful. The general physician (GP) may conduct a physical examination and require further tests to identify existing medical conditions causing the difficulties in conceiving.

Once the medical history has been reviewed and test results have been acquired, the GP may refer a couple to an infertility specialist for further evaluation. Additional tests such as x-ray and ultrasound scan may be required for females while semen analysis and chlamydia test will be done for males.

What is Fertility Counselling?

If faced with an emotional turmoil of bearing a child, some people benefit from the services of professional counsellours to explore feelings, beliefs, and thoughts on procreation. In this way, a patient gets a better understanding of his or her present situation.

Fertility counselling often produces positive results, with clients having the control in changing their thoughts and perspectives and be in a better position in their situation. It also promotes making informed decisions and provides direction for family planning.
